I have over 25 years experience in the vocational rehabilitation field, and work in both continuing and higher education. My theoretical framework is primarily existential and person-centered. Cognitive behavioral interventions can also be very useful. No matter the therapeutic approach a counselor uses, change is most successful when people feel heard, trusted, and safe to explore new feelings and behaviors in a setting that allows for growth and change. Meeting over the Internet can be a wonderful option for you if you're living in an area where resources are limited, whether because of transportation challenges, or lack of specialities you need. It may seem weird to think about seeing a counselor in cyberspace, but it's pretty connecting, as long as you have video access on your computer, a microphone, and a quiet private space to talk.

I don't think counselors and clients have to have the exact same backgrounds, characteristics, or life experiences to do powerful work together. However, there are some areas I can offer that might connect with you: 1. I am a cisgender, white, and a member of the LGBTQ+ community 2. I have personal experience with adoption 3. I have an extensive background in evangelical/fundamentalist Christianity, although that is not my current religious practice 4. I have extensive experience in disability and rehabilitation counseling and services 5. I earned my Master's degree in Counseling from Seattle University, and my PhD in Rehabilitation and Counselor Education from The University of Iowa.
