About My Clients
My clients come to me to address mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, bipolar, ADHD, low self-esteem, trauma, life transitions, family of origin/attachment issues and addictions/compulsions. I use a variety of methods in our sessions: Cognitive Behavior Therapy to help clients challenge distorted thinking, Motivational Interviewing to help clients find their inner reasons and willingness for change, and EMDR which works with body and mind to access and process painful memories.
My Background and Approach
I always wanted to be a therapist but started my career as a kindergarten/first grade teacher. I taught for seven years, stayed home with my kids and then went back to grad school. An internship was required to graduate so I found myself at a psychiatric hospital working with severely mentally ill and chemically dependent patients. It was gratifying to see people get well through therapy and medication and to get to know them in the groups I led. I graduated and two days later my younger brother died by suicide. He had a history of mental health challenges and had been five-years sober but relapsed on alcohol. This traumatic experience solidified my desire to help people find hope and healing. I believe in a collaborative approach to help my clients reach their goals. Developing a working relationship with a counselor can be healing and empowering and believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity and compassion in a warm, non-judgmental space.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Therapy is a form of self-care. Developing a working relationship with a counselor can be healing and empowering. I encourage clients to find ways to better cope with life’s challenges by talking, processing and embracing change in a practical, realistic way.
