Processing your experience can be illuminating for a client who is struggling in an abusive relationship. Oftentimes, people are shocked at how closely the cycle mirrors their own experience. Treatment gives you the time and space to feel supported while determining next steps as well as reflecting on where you have been emotionally. Developing coping mechanisms to gain a better understanding of self.
Anxiety is extremely overwhelming, therapy can help to identify specific targets: hopelessness, helplessness, indecision, self-criticism, rumination. In therapy we also identify and reduce dysfunctional automatic thoughts and use specific cognitive techniques to help patient challenge negative automatic thoughts and identify and challenge underlying maladaptive assumptions that contribute to anxious symptoms. EMDR is also used to reduce specific distressing events or phobias.

EMDR is an eight-phase treatment method to address symptoms of Anxiety, PTSD, Specific Phobias, Level of urge regarding substance abuse. The 8-phase treatment includes: History taking, client preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure and reevaluation of treatment effect are the eight phases of this treatment. The client is also given and develop grounding skills to assist in processing distressing events.
The goal for patients is to try to increase clients’ awareness. Clients are expected to do their own seeing, feeling, sensing, & interpreting. This teaches people to become aware of significant sensations within themselves and their environment so that they respond fully and reasonably to situations. The empty chair techniques are utilized to address challenging relationships as well as grief.
