Our primary caregivers and first relationships in the world create a map of our internal world and sense of self in relation to others. Through an attachment and neurodevelopment lens, we begin to understand where we come from and how our relationships have shaped us. With this awareness and through the therapeutic relationship, we are then able to heal the wounds of these parts that have not been seen, heard, and validated.

Prior to private practice, I worked with a domestic and sexual violence organization serving women and families who have experienced domestic/sexual violence and abuse. I have received extensive training regarding crisis and safety planning, types of abuse, power and control dynamics, and the impacts on mental health (healing shame/guilt) that often accompany leaving an abusive situation.

I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) Therapy which is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. Similar to art therapy, it does not requite talking rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to begin the natural healing process.

As a trained art therapist, I observe unique patterns and themes in the art process with each of my clients to help fuel self-reflection and increase self-awareness. The therapy room and artwork can act as a container to hold space for fear, hopes, and desires.

It is also my belief (and backed by research) that the therapeutic relationship is the top priority. In this way, cultivating reciprocal trust, collaboration, and openness are pivotal to creating a space to safely practice tools and express emotions freely.
