About My Clients
I work with a variety of clients from adolescents to young adults to military veterans. I tend to work with populations who struggle to be able to define their place in the greater community. Whether they are a member of the LGBTGEQIAP+ community or a military veteran, everyone sometimes struggles with their personal identity and how or where that fits into their life. Clients tend to find it easy to talk to someone who knows their language, and can appreciate their shared experiences.
My Background and Approach
I earned my MS in School Counseling in 2016 from Southern Connecticut State University, and returned for a Post-Master's Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2019. I am knowledgeable in a variety of different therapeutic styles including: person centered, DBT and CBT skills, and Motivational Interviewing, but I tend to work from a Solution-Focused approach. This means I try and assist clients with identifying a specific issue in their life and developing solutions to it. I have worked with school-aged adolescents for over 15 years, and with military veterans in a clinical capacity for the last 3. Having been a soldier for 20 years, and an out gay man for almost as many, I can appreciate these same struggles in many of the clients with whom I work. I am passionate about learning and extend this to my clinical practice. I am continuously looking for new techniques to bring to counseling, and feel that the stories my clients share with me are part of this journey.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I love coming to sessions with clients, and while that may seem odd, it's because I did not have a great experience myself. I often found therapists who did not fit me, or understand who I was and what I was going through. My goal is to be the kind of therapist I needed for others. I served in the Connecticut Army National Guard for 20 years, and I deployed to Kuwait in 2004 as part of Operation Iraqi. I know the pressures of serving, the stress it places on families, and I know the resilience of our service members and their families. I also understand the stigma of seeking help while in the military. I am here to serve those who are serving.
