About My Clients

Leilani is an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist (AMFT) with offices in Valley Village and in Encino, California. Leilani provides LGBT affirmative therapy and works with couples and individuals to create a new way of being in order that enables clients to show up more fully in their most important relationships.

My Background and Approach

My integrative approach to therapeutic work draws from a diverse range of psychodynamic workshops and education involving trauma-informed therapy, adolescent self-image/empowerment, parental alienation, EMDR, mentalization, sex addiction, substance abuse addiction, grief & trauma workshops, mindfulness and postmodern queer ethics. I began working in the field in 2016 as a Trainee at Counseling West, an affordable nonprofit counseling center in Sherman Oaks. I earned my master’s degree (M.A.) in Counseling Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute and my B.A. in History from UCLA. I reside in Sherman Oaks with my two adolescent daughters, my partner and her two children. I am a member of California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) and the Stonewall LGBTQ Democrats.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

My integrative approach to therapeutic work with individuals, adolescents, couples and families has been informed by a diverse range of psychodynamic trainings, workshops and education. At Pacifica Graduate Institute, I earned my master’s degree (M.A.) in Counseling Psychology in May 2018. In August 2018, I was a presenter at a London-based conference, Moving Upstream: Family Separation Clinic and European Association of Parental Alienation Practitioners. The presentation, titled, “Therapy Contraindicated: The Treatment Challenges of Working with Severely Alienated Children”, highlighted the key findings of my graduate thesis on the negative impact children face during times of high-conflict parental divorce. Prior to this, I earned a basics-level Mentalization certification jointly offered by the Anna Freud Center based in London and the Menninger Clinic at Harvard Medical Center.
