About My Clients
A lot of the people I work with are not in crisis. They are capable adults who have been carrying something for a long time and have gotten very good at carrying it, and who are starting to notice what that costs. My training is in evidence-based treatment, and I draw on it throughout. But I don’t believe there is one protocol that fits everyone who walks in. What I try to do is understand what is actually going on for you, and then do that work alongside you
My Background and Approach
Dr. Thaxter earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Mississippi, where she researched social support in individuals living with chronic pain. She completed her APA-accredited predoctoral internship in Health Service Psychology at VA Long Beach Healthcare System. Dr. Thaxter provides individual therapy to adults; the practice is built on these approaches: CBT, ACT, DBT, and CPT. Rather than fitting every person to one protocol, she draws on whichever suits the work in front of her, often more than one. She brings a strengths-based lens informed by positive psychology and cultural sensitivity to person-centered care. She tailors her approach to each client’s unique needs, values, and goals. She is committed to creating a collaborative, validating space that supports growth, resilience, and healing. She also offers structured telehealth groups: CPT, trauma skills, DBT skills, postpartum moms, CBT for chronic pain, CBT for insomnia, and mindful self-compassion.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe therapy works best when it fits the person, not the other way around — no single protocol suits everyone, so I draw on several evidence-based approaches and shape the work around you. My guiding belief is the one behind the practice's name: the mountains don't get smaller — therapy changes you, building the tools to climb whatever comes next. Outside of sessions, I'm a mom to a young daughter, and our time together is my favorite part of the day. I recharge in nature and on the tennis court, and life with a playful black lab keeps me laughing.
