About My Clients
Many of Laura’s clients come in when they are feeling overwhelmed from struggling with anxiety, trauma, marriage/relationship issues, or life transitions, such as becoming a new mom. Laura is particularly passionate about serving people who have experienced some form of trauma in their lives. She also has advanced training in the area of EMDR, Gottman Method Couples Counseling, and Perinatal/Postnatal Mood and Anxiety.
My Background and Approach
Laura received her Master's Degree at Colorado Christian University, and gained experience at private practices and by volunteering at local domestic violence and human trafficking shelters. Laura has extensive training in EMDR, which is used to decrease the frequency and intensity of distress caused by the traumatic experiences. Laura focuses on creating a calm and supportive environment that promotes hope and healing. In session, Laura works with clients to increase coping skills, recognize and reframe distorted and intrusive thoughts, and change negative core beliefs such as “I can’t handle this”, “I’m not good enough”, and “I should have done something” into something positive. During the first session, Laura takes time to get to know clients by talking with them about their experiences and their goals for counseling. Laura strives to provide a relationship that is supportive and encouraging while offering clients unconditional positive regard.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn more about themselves from a therapeutic standpoint so that they can better understand where their thought patterns and reactions come from and how to change them for the better. We often never take the time to discover these things though because we are too busy pushing through them to survive in this fast paced world. Our thoughts, emotions, and reactions to the world around us is strongly influenced by our parents/caregivers, relationships, and experiences throughout our lives. However, sometimes those interactions can negatively impact our current functioning. They can cause anxiety, panic, distress, negative core beliefs, and more. By learning more about ourselves, we can better understand and change our reactions and improve our current functioning, relationships, and lives.
