About My Clients
Every person, couple, and family faces obstacles that challenge their sense of wellbeing, safety, wholeness, and/or connectedness. Framing such obstacles with a systemic lens, compassion and encouragement can help mitigate the impact they have on our daily lives. My goal is to walk with you through this process of self-understanding, and to help you discover the tools that you need to feel better equipped to face challenges with confidence, self-love, and perhaps a little humor.
My Background and Approach
My toolbox is full of tools that I've acquired over years of personal experience, education, and professional experience--all of which are necessary in order to be genuine and objective. From a personal perspective, I can relate to issues that include: divorce; blended families; issues related to adoption; ADHD; premature death of a parent, sibling, child, and other significant person; family discord; and living with/loving someone with a personality disorder. My education is grounded in clinical psychology, with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. The majority of my professional experience includes working with children, young adults, and the families of those who have developmental disabilities. All of this experience has been quite literally mind-altering! But more importantly, eye-opening. Everyone comes to the table with a story that is worth hearing; heartaches that are worth healing; and hopes worth seeking. Channeling our inner Dr. Seuss: Let's move mountains!
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that we are shaped by our genetics, as well as our experiences. Yup--Nature/Nurture. The way that we experience things is affected by how we're biologically wired to perceive things; and the way that we perceive things is affected by our experiences. Yup--both statements are true. Wild! Given this, I don't think that there is a single way to address a specific issue. Before I can honestly and objectively help you work through the challenge(s) you're currently facing, I need to know who you are as a person, a friend, a parent, a partner...and most importantly, how you see yourself within the chaos that brings you to me. I'm not scared! I can't promise cures, but I can assure you that I will take your pain and fear and confusion very seriously, and I will embrace you and your concerns with compassion and sincerity. My background in life, behavior intervention, and my need for levity in all things scary, will bring a pragmatic and humorous influence to our working relationship.
