Thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all interconnected. When we want to make change in our lives, we must intervene in one or more of those three areas. CBT relies heavily on thinking about thinking. I like to bring a mindful approach to this: can we observe our thoughts and feelings, and determine a purposeful response (rather than quick reaction) to them? This is key in creating change in our lives.
I imagine anxiety as a little monster that lives on your shoulder, constantly whispering two lies into your ear: "The worst thing is definitely going to happen" and "you can't handle it when it does." Anxiety is essentially a protection mechanism, an alarm that goes off when we need to pay attention or risk getting hurt. The key is learning when and how to turn that alarm system off, so we can get back to living a beautiful, rich, full life without too much fear.
