About My Clients
I love working with others in the helping professions such as doctors, nurses, fire fighters and other therapists. I find that interacting with the suffering of others takes an emotional toll on those who feel that they are supposed to fix it. Empathy drain and ruminating on clients after work can make it hard to focus on yourself and may even make us want to numb out. I hope to help keep the helpers working, because we certainly need them.
My Background and Approach
I was trained in EMDR in 2018 and graduated in 2009 from IUPUI with a Masters Degree in Clinical Rehabilitation Psychology. I also took classes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and have practiced this my entire career. I worked in all levels of care at St. Vincent Stress Center until 2014, when I left for private practice. I have worked with all ages, genders, sexualities, faiths, etc. I try my best to approach trauma with reverence but also some levity. I attempt to keep things informal and relatable for my clients. I have a strong and opinionated personality, which hopefully helps clients to get clear, necessary feedback that they may not get from others in their lives.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe we all need therapy sometimes! However, it doesn't have to be stuffy or uncomfortable. What people learn about mental health comes far too often from media and outlets that put out bad information or lead people to believe things that have been long disproven. I believe that clients deserve evidence based, clinically effective treatments, not just a nice chat about their week. You can get that from your friends for free. Therapy is a skill and you are paying for the information that I can share with you, not for the pleasure of my company. Though I am very charming, I doubt that would alone would be worth the time and money.
