About My Clients
I work with people who want to be more present in their lives, to manifest their most authentic selves, but perhaps are feeling stuck, whether due to anxiety, depression, health issues, or low self-esteem. Loneliness and disconnection may also be part of the picture, despite a genuine desire to be closer to others. I enjoy working with people over 18, including college students/young adults, and those of all ages struggling to find and create meaning in their lives.
My Background and Approach
I've worked with people across the life span, from college-age to those at end-of-life. My professional experiences are many and varied, including a university counseling center, partial hospitalization/intensive outpatient (PHP/IOP) setting, as well as hospice and nursing home settings. As many of my clients have had serious physical health issues, I've learned the power of deep, non-judgmental listening and of creating a space for people just to *be* as they are. I do not try to force change or solutions on anyone. I take a relational approach--very much the opposite of the cold, stiff, psychology "professional" sitting in a chair and nodding their head from time to time. I care about getting to know you, and I may share things about myself in session as well. It is extremely important to me that my clients feel safe, supported, and free to share what's on their mind, and I have to be willing to be authentic as well in order to create that kind of space.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I understand that considering therapy can be a scary process, especially if you have any marginalized identities, and/or have been invalidated by any healthcare provider in the past. I also acknowledge that mental health providers are in a position of power, whether they realize it or not, and I take that very seriously. I do my absolute best to make the therapy space non-hierarchical, and to be self-aware as to how my privilege has the potential to affect the therapeutic relationship.
