About My Clients

As a Personal Consultant in private practice I work with people, not disorders. I draw upon my extensive graduate studies in psychosocial development and the behavioral and cognitive sciences and five decades of professional training and experience in many forms of counseling and therapy to support the normal growth processes in the lives of my clients. A Personal Consultant is a personal development counselor -- a professional counselor/therapist for the normal challenges and crises in life.

My Background and Approach

I earned my masters degree in Pastoral Counseling at Boston University School of Theology (1969-1973) and I view my counseling vocation and relationships as pastoral in nature. Because of my background in pastoral counseling I am very experienced in working with people within the context of their own cultural and religious faith systems, beliefs, values and norms. I continued my formal training in programs at Antioch/New England Graduate School, Boston Family Institute, Hartford Family Institute, and the New England Institute for Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP). I have been in private practice as a counselor/therapist and consultant in West Hartford since 1976. I am board certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors since 1995, and in 1998 became the first Professional Counselor to be licensed by the State of Connecticut. Having studied and experienced most of the theories, models, approaches and techniques of therapy I can draw upon all of them in my consultations.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

While counseling and psychotherapy can be effective tools in the treatment of psychiatric disorders or “mental illness” these same tools can also be employed to support and encourage healthy optimal growth, development, and well-being. Browsing through photographs and thoughtful, sensitive, but idealized self-promoting profiles is not a very reliable way to choose a therapist. This is not Internet dating. You are seeking a professional confidant with a compatible personality, style, attitude and philosophy, because you need a trusting and supportive relationship to get the most from therapy. A good person-to-person fit is the most important requirement for a positive and beneficial experience. Be prepared to meet in person with more than one licensed counseling professional to find one who feels like a good fit for you. You don’t have to decide whether you want to meet again with someone right after the initial consultation. Trust your personal sense of comfort and connection.

I have experience with the following
  • Agnosticism
  • Atheism
  • Christianity
  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
  • Judaism
  • Interfaith
  • Multifaith
