About My Clients
Couples and individuals I support often say they’ve "lost themselves" in their relationship(s). They feel like they’ve become roommates, communication is "non-existent," and at times aren’t even sure who they are anymore. You’ll benefit from learning concrete communication skills in the context of each partner's unique backgrounds and personalities, while doing so in a safe space with the support of a third party (me!). We’ll explore patterns of codependency and the role anxiety often plays.
My Background and Approach
As a marriage and family therapist, I'm specially trained to work systemically with individuals, couples, and families. This means that I work with every client to identify roles and patterns in their lives and relationships that work well or may be contributing to your current struggles. We won't discuss problems in terms of assigning blame; instead, we will explore and be curious about how you adjust to your experiences and how these experiences adjust to you. For example, if you and your partner are experiencing communication problems during conflict, we will break down each of your unique communication styles and how you each react and respond to the styles. If your partner is a "yeller," how do you experience that? Does yelling make you more likely to shut down or yell back? Or maybe yelling doesn't bother you much, but cussing does? I am trained to help you put the "puzzle pieces" together to help you increase the chances of more effective communication.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that every single person has strengths that they bring to the world and their relationships. However, sometimes our circumstances and experiences make it really difficult for us to identify or tap into those strengths. I believe that therapy can be fun and that laughter should absolutely be a part of the process. You will be doing some really important work in therapy and life in general is hard enough to not bring some fun to our sessions!
