About My Clients
Do you feel uncomfortable with youreself: overwhelmed, uncertain, or afraid; depressed, stuck, or "turned upside down"?. Is your family feeling chaotic or constantly fighting the same argument again and again? Often my clients have encountered something that made them "rethink" who they are or how they act. These events might be chosen, like a move, or they might have been a surprise, like a traumatic experience.
My Background and Approach
I have a background in transpersonal psychology and family systems therapy, and I apply both to my work. I want to help you find what you're good at and use that to deal with whatever brought you in to see me. When you first come to see me, I'll ask a lot of questions about you, like "What have you already tried?" and "What are you good at?" and "What caused you to call me?" We will troubleshoot your difficulties together, and then we can build on what you already know, and work together to help you build new skills, so that you will have new ways to address your troubles. Therapy is an active process, so in addition to talking I may invite you to use art, journaling, somatic exercises, mindfulness, or role plays to help you explore your situation and try new ways of being in the world.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that everyone has strengths and abilities that can help them deal with whatever brings them to therapy. I believe that even long-standing patterns of behavior or thought can change as a result of focused work. I believe that oppression is a form of trauma, and that one job of therapy is to challenge oppressive societal patterns---racism, sexism, heteronormative thinking, fat phobia, and healthism, among others---and help people heal from their effects.
