Hi there! Nice to meet you. My name is Katy and I am a licensed counselor hoping to help you heal.
Licensed Professional Counselor in Waterbury, CT
Trauma survivors are equipped with powerful defenses. Those might have helped when you had to be strong, but now they get in the way- not being able to trust anyone, waiting for the next bad thing to happen, self-medicating, etc. So therapy has to respect that- after all, here's another person that you're supposed to just trust? I'll do my imperfect best to honor where you're at, and provide the safe-enough space, and let you decide if and when you are ready to do the work.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy uses your mind's own capacity for healing. Adversity or trauma can affect your thoughts, emotions, and physical body. Back-and-forth sensory mechanisms (such as tapping) help to activate the connections in your brain to jump-start the processing of memories. When the old stuff has been cleared away, it loses some of its power in your life, and the healing process makes space for what really matters to you.
Providing a safe therapeutic space and attentive listening, I use an integration of EMDR, structural dissociation theory, and ego state therapy/"parts work" to help heal the effects of long-term trauma. I have been receiving advanced training since 2018 with ongoing consultation and education.
I use EMDR therapy to treat not only PTSD, but many other psychological conditions that may have an origin story connected to stuff that happened in the past.
