About My Clients
My clients are a diverse group of individuals, couples, and families spanning a wide variety of ethnicities, beliefs, gender identification, socioeconomic strata, and other human variables. I have a lot of experience with relationship counseling and I enjoy the dynamics that come with this work. Other areas in which I'm interested and experienced include working with people who are facing anxiety, depression, work-life balance, loss of confidence, and aging issues.
My Background and Approach
My approach is to evaluate with you where you are and where you’d like to be, then work with you to reach your goals. Therapy may involve an honest examination of difficult feelings and events; you may experience uncomfortable emotions at times and I will be there for you during this process. The outcome for you depends on many factors including your commitment and readiness for change and also how you feel about me. I use a variety of treatment methods, from some that are very structured to others that are more fluid. The specific method depends a lot on you and how you see therapy unfolding in the most optimal way for yourself and your situation. My background is weighted heavily in the urban community mental health field, where I encountered a diverse array of interesting people who were working to create change in their lives. I was privileged to be invited into their experiences. These collaborations continue to inform and inspire my practice.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
"If you come to help me, then you are wasting your time. If you come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together." -- attributed to Lilla Watson, aboriginal elder. I regard therapy as a collaborative process, where you and I work together to clarify and discover your own questions and your own answers. I live in a multi-racial family with non-binary loved ones, so I don't make assumptions about my ability to "help" you and your family. I ask questions, I listen, I seek; I am humbly curious. I believe in the healing power of love.
