About My Clients
Sometimes life feels like it just won't let up or things try to weigh you down. I appreciate therapy as a way to help sort through stressors and life changes in a space that is all your own. I am here to help you establish boundaries, implement coping mechanisms, and increase self-compassion. Do you have a tendency to ruminate or spiral? Let's parse that out in sessions where you start to work through those thoughts and take back control in a healthy and productive way that works for you.
My Background and Approach
I have a bachelor's in psychology and philosophy and a master's in social work. I obtained my masters in 2014 and worked for the last 8 years in medical social work (dialysis, hospice, home health). I now work full-time as a therapist. I also teach at the University level, educating students who have a diverse set of majors. In therapy, my approach is that of a generalist. I do not ascribe to any one modality, as individuals may benefit from different types of therapy. I have a strong interest in mindfulness-based approaches, solution-focused approaches, ACT and CBT. I utilize a variety of informational mediums, as everyone learns best in a different way. Perhaps a worksheet, a podcast, or a video may help you process further. I love talk therapy and we can break out the white board to throw thoughts and ideas into a visual form. I am open to a variety of experiences, and I don't mind dropping a cuss word or two. It is my hope that you feel like you can be yourself in my office.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I am not faith-based. I am open and value equality, fairness, and empathy. I love travel, funky art and jewelry, a good place to eat, and I really love dogs. I also love to collect heaps of books that I don't always get around to reading. I believe mental health is a part of whole-body health. We learn and adapt our behaviors, interpretations, and beliefs from our environment and also from what we expose ourselves to through books, music, other people, art, etc... I believe we have the power to make positive change, even if that change takes time and can be difficult and/or painful. I believe in strong boundaries because it's your life and other people aren't entitled to your life. It's okay to take up space! You don't have to make yourself smaller to make room for others. I'm an assertive woman who loves to laugh and exercises compassion. I really enjoy what I do as a therapist and an educator.
