About My Clients

If you are looking for a therapist and have landed here, I'm guessing you may feel overwhelmed, anxious and perhaps a little intimidated. Welcome. I know looking for a therapist can be extremely difficult. With over 20 years of experience, I often work with clients who are struggling to cope with anxiety or various kinds of adversity--this may include racial or other forms of trauma.

My Background and Approach

The first thing I'd like to emphasize is how important it is to create a safe space. Throughout decades of research on the effectiveness of therapy, what's always repeated is the primary importance of the relationship. Coming to therapy is a courageous act, and this is particularly true for those who may be marginalized in one way or another. Because of my identity as a white therapist, it's especially important that I create an atmosphere where we can openly discuss any questions or concerns. This process can be very healing. I am an integrative therapist who emphasizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Interpersonal therapy. When needed, I integrate DBT skills and specialized treatment for trauma. I like having a range of approaches to utilize, and emphasize different approaches for different clients. I have training in mindfulness and frequently integrate meditation into my work with clients.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Life can be really hard sometimes, but I believe that change is possible. I believe therapy needs to start with an understanding of the whole person—this includes their life story, family context, and multiple identity factors (including but not limited to race, sexual orientation, and gender/gender identity.) Our lived experience in the world shapes our thoughts about what is possible for us, and that shapes what we do—risks we do or don’t take, people we choose in our lives, and so forth. Change happens when we start to understand the patterns that lead us in directions that don’t serve us. Feelings are part of the picture, too. Painful experience can seem overwhelming, and it’s natural to want to push hurt away. I believe, though, that feelings also tell us when things are going wrong, and offer valuable clues about that if we stop and listen. Mindfulness is an important part of that process. From there, we can start experimenting with doing things a different way.
