About My Clients

I have a particular passion and specialty in working with the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) population. I also enjoy helping clients cope with depression and mood issues, self-criticism/ shame, anxiety disorders, trauma, life changes, social discontent, grief/loss, and illnesses/conditions such as HIV/AIDS. I'm Sex-Positive, Kink-Aware, and Supportive of "Alternative" Relationship Structures. I work with all ages of adults.

My Background and Approach

My work and relationship with each client is unique and guided by their needs. Being trauma-informed and striving towards cultural competency is important to me and I find that does make a difference in how helpful I can be with my clients. I continue adding to an extensive list of training and continuing education that I'd be happy to discuss further- but the bulk of my therapy approach would best be described as skills-based (most often Cognitive Behavioral Therapy/CBT) within a client-centered, attachment-focused relationship. Our treatment is begun and guided by agreed-upon goals. We often discuss how perspective, assumptions, and self-imposed narratives create distress in our lives. Lastly, it is common for clients to have "action plans" outside of the therapy session to work on relevant goals. Overall, I view therapy as a collaboration used to facilitate growth, change, and create a more fulfilling, values-driven life.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Part of what helps me be more effective with my work is that I am a gay-identified male (sexual minority), so have personal experience and understanding of some of the difficulties of LGBTQ folks. This identity has also served me well in empathizing and working effectively with a wide range of folks that feel different, misunderstood, or "on the margins" of society. I try living my life bravely and according to the values I hold dear- and I hope to support my clients to do the same. More about me: I love dogs, my family, friends, and am passionate about social justice (I am a Social Worker after all!) Always taking my lead from the client I am happy to incorporate humor and disclose information about myself when it is appropriate and seems helpful for our work together.
