About My Clients
We know that a one-size-fits-all approach to drug and alcohol treatment doesn't work for everyone. If you are considering getting help for an issue that is worsened by substance use and the old-school approach isn't your thing, you're in the right place. I specialize working with people using substances who also experience depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress. I can also work with people wanting to change their relationship with gambling, pornography use, or other hard-to-stop behaviors.
My Background and Approach
I use a Harm Reduction Psychotherapy orientation which respects many different paths toward change. In working with me, you will find your self-knowledge is honored, your past experiences are respected, and your freedom of choice is prioritized. I've worked with clients who have primary substance use issues for the past 15 years and have a wealth of experience to offer. I have also supervised other clinicians doing this type of work, and managed a specialty program for people with substance use disorders at the Seattle VA Hospital. I use short-term therapy approaches that have research supporting that they work. I primarily use Behavior Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I have expertise in Motivational Interviewing, which is a type of conversation that helps clients make difficult decisions and work toward change. I encourage short homework activities between sessions to speed your progress, and like to check in via secure chat between sessions.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that as a psychologist, I have a social responsibility to advocate for policy change at the state and national level, so that we can address the root causes that worsen physical and mental health. These root causes include systemic race and class discrimination, income inequality, incarceration, and limited access to basic needs. I volunteer for an organization called Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, where I advocate for our state laws to change to improve the health of Washingtonians. I also help educate other health providers on the importance of these issues, so that together we can create meaningful change.
