About My Clients
I am Joshua Dea , a Clinical Mental Health Counseling Student at Marymount University. As a counselor, I believe in the innate resiliency of all living beings, and I seek to collaborate with clients to support their autonomy by increasing a sense of empowerment, growth, and understanding. I believe in working alongside my clients because I believe, like any great project, therapy should be collaborative. I am an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist passionate about working with marginalized people.
My Background and Approach
My approach to counseling is grounded in Client-Centered Therapy, which emphasizes empathy, authenticity, acceptance, and respect for each person’s unique experiences. I believe that you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to provide a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where you can openly explore your thoughts, emotions, experiences, and goals. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I work collaboratively with each client and tailor the counseling process to their individual needs. I focus on building a strong therapeutic relationship where clients feel heard, understood, and valued. When appropriate, I also incorporate techniques from other evidence-based approaches to help clients develop coping skills, increase self-awareness, identify personal strengths, and work toward meaningful change.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Above all, I strive to meet clients where they are. Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, grief, relationship concerns, life transitions, or simply trying to better understand yourself, my goal is to walk alongside you as you discover your strengths, find greater clarity, and create positive changes that align with the life you want to live. I am committed to creating a counseling environment where clients from diverse backgrounds, identities, and life experiences feel welcomed, respected, and valued. I enjoy working with individuals from different cultural and racial backgrounds, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and clients with a variety of beliefs, values, family structures, and lived experiences. My client-centered approach recognizes that each person’s story is unique and that culture, identity, relationships, and personal experiences can influence how we understand ourselves and the world around us. I approach these conversations with openness, curiosity and empathy.
