About My Clients
I help people experiencing relationship or career stress, divorce, a loss, or other major changes. These challenges can lead to pulling away from people, avoiding responsibilities, over or under-working, gambling, gaming, or hours sunk into your phone. Often the situation and the habits are connected, the behavior a way of coping with what's underneath. I help adults and teens understand what's driving these patterns and find better ways to adapt, building insight and motivation along the way.
My Background and Approach
My clients appreciate that I can go deep when needed but also keeps things practical. Together we establish what's wrong and what you want, then work backward through the patterns that are getting in the way. I work well with people who don't see themselves as "therapy people", including men who've not done counseling and anxious teenagers. My approach first looks at what is going wrong now, your past experiences, strengths and goals. What do you want to change, or achieve? What do you want to stay the same? Sometimes, our thoughts and perspectives reflect goals that are unrealistic, unhelpful, or no longer serve us. Other times, we just need to find the flexibility or courage to try a new way of moving towards a fulfilling life.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that a significant aspect of mental health is based in relationships, and that forming relationships in the modern American world is increasingly difficult due to a variety of structural issues – urban planning, technology, or the economy. As a therapist, my job is to help individuals do the best they can to create fulfilling, meaningful and peaceful lives despite these challenges, but I'm passionate about creating a society and families that make it easier for people to be connected with one another.
