About My Clients
I work with children, adolescents and adults struggling with various challenges including anxiety, depression, anger management, ADHD, grief, self-confidence, trauma and addictions in a variety of settings.
My Background and Approach
Hi! My name is Johnie Angell and I am a Resident in Counseling and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. I have a MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BS in Criminal Justice from Bluefield College. I have over 20 years of experience working with people with disabilities to help enable them to secure independence, inclusion and integration to improve employment and quality of life. I have worked in a variety of settings to include state and federal rehabilitative services, insurance, workers compensation and private practice. I utilize a variety of therapeutic modalities and techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, expressive therapies and somatic therapies to name a few.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
One of the most important aspects of therapy is the therapeutic relationship between the client and the therapist. This relationship is founded on trust, understanding, acceptance, and authenticity. I strive to create a positive and hopeful environment that fosters your individual growth and empowerment. Inclusivity is a non-negotiable practice in my therapeutic relationships and as an ally, I hope to create a completely affirming, safe, and inviting space for folks along gender, racial, ethnic, disability and sexual orientation spectrums while recognizing the privilege inherent in my own identity.
