Person-Centered Therapy proposes that people can best help themselves with their problems if they feel safe, supported, and understood. I am a communicator by nature and by trade, and I use these skills and compassion to ensure my clients, whether individuals, or members of a couple or family, each feel heard and understood. This is not to say I let the client do the work of therapy; we do that together. But it cannot happen until the individuals involved know they can find understanding.

More than being fascinated, as I am, by cultures other than my own, I recognize that a person's world-view and behavior can best be helped to change only if their cultural connection, outlook, expectations and attitudes are considered. My background at a historically Black college, as director of a Native American vocational rehab program, conducting therapy in Latin American households, and work with disabled people has shown me the importance of learning and respecting my clients' cultures.

As a psychotherapy generalist, I work with people with various problems, from severe to mildly discomforting, or even those who simple want to be their best self. I use techniques and theories from Freud to CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and from compassionate depth work in trauma to communication skills for interpersonal improvement. Even biophysical approaches to human experience may be what is needed to help a client progress, so I draw from diversity to help the individual or family.

Although I have worked with people with some very serious maladies, many others are now seeking help to enhance their lives by learning more about themselves and ways of being. Whether this means exploring their life in new ways, or using new understanding and skill in communicating with others in their lives, I bring a wide and deep life experience as well as therapeutic training to help clients bring age appropriate abilities and focus to the lifelong journey of personal growth.

As many of my clients have had issues with anxiety, the challenge of many sessions has been to calm them in the moment, and to explore triggers, underlying causes, coping skills, and strategies to reduce and ultimately eliminate anxiety as a barrier to their functioning and enjoyment of life. I teach communication skills to help with interpersonal relations, techniques to establish goals, and behavioral options to reduce general stress and panic.
