Successful treatment of anxiety requires two things: 1. Security and trust in our selves, that we have the capacity to face the unknown and the feared, and 2. The courage and motivation to do so. Our work will help understand the wounds that weaken your belief in yourself and to identify and understand your fears. Then, together, we will challenge you to face those fears so you can experience your resiliency.

Humans are social creatures, but as we learn to protect ourselves emotionally we tend to keep others out. Some of us keep others at a distance. We rely on the strength of our fierce independence though inside we might be suffering on our own. Still others of us try very hard to connect, maybe trying too hard and pushing others away or maybe just quietly doubting that others actually like us. My approach explicitly focuses on building security within ourselves and closeness with others.

Depression, particularly depression that has been present through multiple stages of our lives, is an insidious and painful experience. The guilt, detachment, hopelessness, powerlessness, loneliness, sadness, and anger that we experience, like the swelling of a wound, is a mechanism with which we protect and heal on our own. But together we can help you risk being vulnerable, access your vibrant emotional experience, set free your resilient core self, and take charge of your life.

My primary therapeutic approach is called AEDP. This integrative approach combines modern understandings of interpersonal-neurobiology and attachment theory with tried-and-true experiential methods of psychotherapy. Using AEDP, we work together to understand the functions of distressing behaviors and the core beliefs driving anxiety, shame, and guilt. We work together to change these dynamics. Then we work together to nourish and grow your resilient, and very human, core self.

My approach is informed by an extensive education and background in working with people who have experienced trauma. These include traumas of commission - the violent, terrifying, or life-altering acts you may have experienced - and traumas of omission - physical and emotional neglect, lack of security, terrifying aloneness. My clients have expressed appreciation for my warm, empathic, and attuned presence, my direct, no-nonsense approach, and my inexhaustible belief in their core humanity.

With some clients, I use Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as a method to accelerate treatment. As a form of exposure therapy, EMDR assists in reducing the distress you feel when exposed to reminders of traumatic events. But EMDR can take you even deeper, helping to change the central meaning of those events, both consciously and as stored out of awareness within your nervous system. This fosters a sense of empowerment, increased security, and healthy self-efficacy.
