About My Clients

The filtering down of social, political, and economic realities into our psychological, emotional, and relational lives creates the internalization of oppressive systems. Mandates of relentless optimism, neoliberal ideology, and inequity intensify alienation, anxiety, shame, numbness, and loneliness. Kindling acceptance can make room for change and resistance. Congruence with ourselves, even if at odds with dominant systems, brings opportunities to forge meaningful, sustainable, connected lives.

My Background and Approach

I completed my graduate degree in Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University in 2014, with a specialization in Somatic Psychology highlighting the inter-relatedness of our physical, physiological, psychological, and social experiences. My undergraduate degree from Antioch College in Cultural Interdisciplinary Studies focused on gender and sexuality studies, stoking critical analysis. My formal and informal education has emphasized the historical, intergenerational, political, and interpersonal implications of social structures. A life-long Portlander and lover of books and words, I believe in the possibilities that come from agitation, and the momentum of small shifts. Drawing on feminist, existential, critical, and liberation philosophies, the purpose of therapy with me is not fixing or curing, securing happiness, or progressing on a tidy trajectory. I strive to offer resonance, deep listening, witnessing, invitations to question and redefine, and thoughtful skepticism.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Obscuring the systems and structures shaping our experiences, realities, and bodies serves to locate pathology within individuals. It assigns personal responsibility, perpetuates shame towards pain, and distorts recognition of the origins of suffering. The internalization of systemic injustices and their rationales, iniquity and its disguises, can form the belief that they stem from within. The field and history of psychology has participated in justifying and reinforcing this individualizing myth. But as we absorb structural and systemic influences, we also emanate outward. While we internalize systems of domination in our bodies and psyches, liberation within can connect us with avenues to contribute towards liberation in our world. Developing critical consciousness can help us to reconstruct relationships, rewrite beliefs and understandings, and build practices of solidarity.
