About My Clients
Many of my clients seek therapy because worrying, irritability, feeling anxious in social settings, sadness and stress have started to affect their work, school or relationships. They may be perfectionists, criticize themselves, self-harm, or use food or alcohol to feel better. They often say they do not feel ‘like themselves’. Some are dealing with chronic pain, a loss, or a major change in their life such as loss of a job or relationship and want additional support as they move forward.
My Background and Approach
I am trained in evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy. At a first session, I'll ask you to tell me your life story, which many say is a new experience. Once we identify your goals I'll include insight-oriented and skills based methods in each session, and encourage your practice new skills each week. I received my MSW and MPH from the University of North Carolina and my BA from Brown University. My experience includes working in 20+ years as a clinician, manager and supervisor at community health centers, high school-based wellness centers and community mental health organization. I have worked with clients diverse in age, income, educational and professional background. When not working Jennifer gardens, hikes, bikes and throws pottery. I am a Single Mother By Choice to one biological child and one teenage foster child.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that therapy is a way to hear yourself. Feelings and thoughts usually don't go away, but we can learn to experience them differently. I also believe it's important to learn to be as nice to ourselves as we are to others – though it is surprisingly difficult! When we succeed at this, our approach to relationships, ourselves and our future can open up! As we talk, I'm here to actively listen, reflect back what I hear and guide you to deeper understanding. What is most important and meaningful to you? We’ll explore the 'how' and the 'why' to tackle problems - and figure out what works for you.
