About My Clients

Many of the people I work with feel haunted by their past and struggle to connect with people in the present. This can show up in overwhelming anxiety, procrastination, feeling down on themselves, communication and relationship issues. Many have difficulty with sleep and some struggle with the way they drink or use drugs. Our early work usually focuses on skill building and fostering awareness and insight into challenges before doing any more in-depth work.

My Background and Approach

I draw from my experience working in community behavioral health, addressing both substance abuse and trauma in inpatient and outpatient settings. My theoretical base is in cognitive behavioral therapy, so an exploration of the interconnectedness of one's thoughts, feelings and behaviors is often an early part of the therapeutic process. However, I take an individualized approach, tailoring the work to individual needs. I'm trained in EMDR and certified in Prolonged Exposure therapy, two very different, but highly researched, time-limited and effective treatments for PTSD. I am trained in TF-CBT, Pain Reprocessing Therapy and am IFS (Internal Family Systems) informed.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

This country is continuing down a concerning path to put it mildly. While the systemic issues supporting inequality and prejudice against racial/ethic groups and those in the LGTBQ community are worsening, I believe therapy has the power to create a micro-environment of healing, encouragement, accountability, and safety. It is from a place of greater internal stability that we can be more effective in creating larger change. I believe in human potential and resiliency. Our biology certainly matters, however, our experiences, our environment, and how we respond to them are just as important in shaping who we are. Fun fact about our biology: the human brain remains elastic and capable of forming new connections throughout our lifespan. That means that change is always possible! I believe in our innate ability to grow, change and live, even against terrible odds.
