PTSD is what occurs when you have an experience that overwhelms your system, leaving you unable to complete the stress response that is needed to move it through and out of your body. This results in the debilitating symptoms of hypervigilance, flashbacks and sleep disturbances. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based practice that allows you to process your feelings. I provide a safe space to work at your pace.

The pregnancy can be a joyous and exciting time, it is not uncommon for women to be overwhelmed by the changes occurring in the body and the many plans to be made to prepare for a new child. Because the mind and body act as time machines, these changes can sometimes trigger unexpected feelings and fears that may be related to the past or present. I have supported hundreds of women of color through their pregnancy, the 4th trimester and beyond.

Many of us experience anxiety, and sometimes our fears about having anxiety can exacerbate the pain that is associated. Anxiety is a physical reaction to thoughts when we automatically believe our negative, catastrophizing or intrusive thoughts. Through Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy we can help create a little bit of space between you and your thoughts using techniques and tools. Or we can also explore origins to address them at the root cause. I will meet you at your stage of readiness.

I have found that the act of changing your worrisome thoughts comes from learning how to separate who you are - your consciousness - from your thoughts. It is easy to believe that we ARE our thoughts because they are so automatic. When we start the practice of watching thoughts, we learn that we can have all kinds of thoughts without reacting to them.

I believe each person's needs are unique which calls for customized treatment tailored specifically to address those individual needs. I am person-centered, strengths based and integrate various evidence-based modalities. I'll use Motivational Interviewing to help you move through challenges and elements of DBT, EFT and ACT to incorporate skills and tools. Though I find EMDR to be most effective in treating trauma, I will also use Narrative, Schema or Psychoanalytic Therapies when appropriate.
