Being in the grip of depression may mean you feel numb. Any emotion that passes through you feels like it is out of reach or dampened by a thick cotton pad. It also may show up as a distinct lack of energy and motivation to go about the activities of your daily life. Depression shows up in very individual ways. Therapy can help you regain full access to your emotions and unlock the energy and will to move forward again.

My primary training was in Depth and Psychodynamic orientations. I think Jung's model is a good one. Ignore the Unconscious at your own peril. I think of the psyche as an entity encompassing what we are aware of about ourselves, what we are unaware of about ourselves, and the ways history and current culture play into how we move in the world. When I am working, I keep in mind that I am working on behalf of psyche, what does psyche need from you so you can get unstuck and on track?

If you ever get the chance to watch video of Carl Rogers working, I highly recommend it. He was a master of the craft of therapy, and I see his techniques for deeply listening and reflecting as foundational to my work. While Jung and those in his lineage inform most of my theory, Rogers informs the base of my technique. There is something deeply healing about being fully witnessed and understood. I want that healing for each of my clients. That's what we're shooting for.
