About My Clients
I help men, women, and couples to learn from experience; to set priorities and solve problems; to find meaning in adversity; and to identify their best avenues forward. Therapeutic goals include greater depth, competence, self-knowledge, and interpersonal connection.
My Background and Approach
I'm very interested in discovering and addressing what is currently difficult for you, and what your life goals and aspirations are. Together we can come to a deeper understanding of your experience, opening up new opportunities to grow and learn. My core approach is psychodynamic, so I see each patient as a unique individual, with a unique personal history. The past lives on in the unconscious, so enhancing self-knowledge increases your ability to make free and informed choices in the present. I can help you point your life in the direction where you want it to go--and help you get clarity about what direction that is.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe much of our suffering comes from the effort to avoid thoughts and feelings that we sense might be overwhelming. But in an environment of reliable, wholesome, compassionate support, it often turns out that the avoidance was actually worse than what we were avoiding. Anxiety, depression, stuckness, and even loneliness can arise as a defenses against developmental tasks we might yearn to perform well, without feeling quite ready to try. I believe that loving self-acceptance is the basis of vitality and well-being. Happiness is part of well-being---but so is a capacity to feel sad, or disappointed, without letting that spoil the joy of living.
