I understand what it's like to feel misunderstood and alienated from others, and I enjoy working with people who know or suspect they are "on the spectrum" whether they choose to identify as Autistic or not. If you believe this includes you, we can work together to better understand how your cognitive and emotional styles can be challenging in a world meant to benefit neurotypicals. I take a strengths-based perspective to validate your experience, abilities, and interests.
I am trained as a CRC (clinical rehabilitation counselor), which means specializing in disabilities. Having a disability can be confusing and a non-linear process from feeling grief/loss to acceptance and coping. I particularly enjoy working with people with "invisible disabilities" such as chronic illnesses and believe my holistic mindfulness-based body-centered approach is particularly helpful for integrating a mind-body connection.
I work with a lot of men around masculinity, gender roles, processing shame, and managing anger.
I believe mindfulness is a powerful tool for studying one's experience and making space to choose actions based on values.
Hakomi is a type of experiential therapy, which means going beyond talk-therapy to focus on the moment.
Hakomi and Somatic Experiencing are types of experiential therapies, which means working in the present moment experience of what is happening in your body. Sometimes it's helpful for my clients to take a break from using language in order to listen to their bodies.
First of all, I don't believe that autism should be considered a "disorder." I see our ableist culture as more the problem and I work as an advocate for neurodivergent folks. If you are autistic, I prefer to get to know you as an individual and find out what you are interested to work on in therapy. I can support you by learning about your strengths and interests to better support the areas that you're looking to change.
