About My Clients

My clients are people who long to improve. They have often faced trauma and are entrenched in unhealthy emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns. During therapy sessions my clients feel heard, seen, and found. They learn to identify triggers, unhelpful thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and replace them with a healthier version of themselves. Together we will navigate through chaos and confusion until we reach clarity. My clients are brave and persistent people who inspire me to be better.

My Background and Approach

I use an eclectic approach because knowing and helping people is not a one size fits all situation. Always, we will start from a client centered approach to therapy. Though there will often be a clinical agenda, the session belongs to my clients and whatever they need to bring to the table. Emotion focused cognitive therapy has been helpful to process, express, and sometimes change emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Behavioral therapy helps to define behavior, track and quantify behavioral habits, and eventually change behavioral habits. Narrative therapy has been valuable in changing my client's relationship to their own story. One of the goals of narrative therapy is to reduce/eliminate shame and to identify areas of post traumatic growth. With narrative therapy clients go from victims to victors. Because trauma and addiction are areas of deep pain existential therapy is also used address existential, philosophical, and spiritual questions, concerns and fears.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I emigrated as a child from Puerto Rico to the United States. I remember learning english in the only school that had an ESL program in my city. This school was not in my district and we took two school busses to get there. I first learned white southern english, and later realized the difference between white southern english and black southern english. I remember the feelings of disorientation and fear of not knowing how to navigate the new culture I was in and not being able to understand or express myself before learning English. For this reason I have a tender heart for immigrants, refugees and the displaced. Because I experienced the residual segregation that continued to exist in my city growing up I am passionate about minority well being and equity. I also have a personal interest in spirituality, religion, philosophy, and existentialism. I believe these are soul topics and I love discussing these for deep healing. I believe in Deep Well Counseling.
