About My Clients
Things are difficult right now for transgender and gender nonbinary people. You may be dealing with the interacting distress of the political climate on top of anxiety, depression, life challenges, trauma, and/or navigating gender dysphoria and transition. Race, class, immigration, disability or other intersecting identities can further complicate the challenges in your life. It's understandable if you are feeling overwhelmed, and I'm here to help you manage these personal and collective crises.
My Approach to Helping
I'm an intersectional trans feminist-based therapist who is compassion focused, well-being centered, and liberation oriented. I've been working in solidarity with our communities for two decades. As a queer femme trans woman, I understand the value in seeing a therapist with a shared identity. I'm trained in Compassion Focused Therapy, a holistic biopsychosocial model that recognizes the impact our social context has on our mental distress. Research shows that giving ourselves compassion, as well as accepting compassion from and providing compassion to others, can enhance our overall well-being and increase our ability to handle and overcome personal and social struggles. Through a collaborative therapeutic relationship centering your well-being, we will work together to develop the capacities and tools that will allow you to face your suffering and the suffering around so as to contribute to your personal liberation. I believe your well-being and liberation matters.
My Values as a Therapist
There are three interrelated motivation guiding my practice: compassion, well-being and liberation. Compassion for our personal and collective suffering has the ability to change our lives, the lives of others, and the world. Compassion requires courage to open to suffering (ours and others) with the motivation act to prevent and alleviate it. Compassion Focused Therapy provides science-based support for the benefits of developing our compassionate mind. Well-Being means shifting away from a pathologizing focus on treatment of disorders and trauma towards a communal motivation nurturing transformation. This centers the development of greater holistic physical, mental/emotional and social well-being. Liberation guides the transformative process by addressing intersecting power dynamics of privilege and oppression among individuals and groups. The personal and social are interdependent, therefore our personal and collective liberation are mutually related and reinforcing.
