I believe that empathy and compassion are key in understanding any concern in therapy. I believe that everyone has a purpose in life and needs to be heard.
Codependency can be understood as the "family disease" or reaction to a loved one's behavior and it not limited to substance use disorders. Understanding the dynamics of the relationship in addition to finding helpful coping strategies is part of the therapeutic process.
Substance Use Disorders are not limited to alcohol but can span out into multiple chemical addictions that disable individuals and families. Gaining insight into escaping or numbing feelings as well as developing a supportive social environment are key in relapse prevention planning.
Psychodynamic, CBT, reality therapy, motivational interviewing as well as existentialism approaches all prove to be effective dependent on the primary concern.
CBT techniques outline the thoughts and emotions and how that determines human behavior. Mindfulness, and self-compassion and other CBT tools are the most helpful with mood disorders and substance use disorders but also can be used to improve self-esteem, conflict and beyond.
