About My Clients

People I work with tell me things like "I can't turn off my brain," or "I'm all over the place," or "I want to stop overreacting but I just can't." They often feel at the mercy of their emotions. The quality of their relationships and jobs and daily experiences all seem to depend on how they feel at any given moment. Most of them are sensitive and insightful souls who have a real desire to feel close to others and feel more in control of their own insides. They just don't know how....yet!

My Background and Approach

I have been a counselor for over 12 years and it's my true calling. I have a Master of Science degree in Clinical Counseling and an M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction (Education...I had planned to be a classroom teacher but I learned I like one-on-one development of people more). I went to school at The University of Texas at Austin (grew up in Texas) and at North Carolina State University (I live in NC now). The main thing to know about me is that I'm very strategy-oriented in therapy. I enjoy equipping people with the knowledge and tools they need in order to feel and think and communicate and relate more effectively. I build a connection with clients by listening carefully to their story and their patterns and then I identify tweaks & shifts that can get them closer to their goals. I am a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Intensively Trained Clinician, have extensive training in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and completed Level II Gottman Method Couples therapy training.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe that EVERYONE does better when EVERYONE does better. I saw that on a bumper sticker in my early 20s and it has been my internal motto ever since. I bought the bumper sticker but it never made it to my car...it has traveled with me from place to place over the years as a constant orientation to what really matters. It's on my wall right now. I think that sticker knew before I did that I would end up as a therapist. I aim to help people be truly seen and feel truly valued. To that end, I am on the accepting & open end of the spectrum and have deep appreciation for all countries, ethnicities, gender orientations, sexual orientations, spiritual beliefs, economic statuses, and value systems. I hope to see a world where we can listen more and dig our heels in less. And I support causes in my free time that work towards ensuring freedom and safety and equality for all of society's members.
