About My Clients

Do you feel like your brain is always working against you? If anxiety keeps you stuck in overthinking and ADHD makes follow-through feel impossible, you're not broken — you just haven't had the right support. I work with adults navigating ADHD and anxiety who are ready to stop fighting themselves and start working with their brain instead of against it. I specialize in affirming, individualized care for neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ individuals.

My Background and Approach

Dr. Heather Clifford (she/her) is a licensed psychologist and founder of Emerging Psychology, PLLC, providing online therapy to adults throughout New York State. Dr. Clifford specializes in working with adults who experience ADHD and anxiety, particularly those who have spent years feeling overwhelmed, misunderstood, or like they just can't seem to get out of their own way. She offers both therapy and comprehensive assessment for adults seeking clarity about an ADHD diagnosis. Her approach is trauma-informed and neurodivergent-affirming, with a deep respect for the way ADHD and anxiety intersect with self-worth and identity. Her clinical work is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), CBT, and mindfulness-based practices. She also has experience providing LGBTQ+ affirming care and is particularly knowledgeable about the unique ways anxiety and ADHD present in queer individuals.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe therapy gives you time to nurture and explore the relationship you have with yourself and others. We are often overloaded with messages that we need to improve ourselves, when what we actually need is time to discover what we value and build a life we feel connected with. I am committed to actively examining and challenging systems of oppression, including white supremacy, racism, ableism, homophobia, and fatphobia. I believe these systems hugely impact our mental health and come into play in the therapy room. I am always open to explore these topics. My personal values include connection, learning, and empowerment. I feel most embodied near water and when I can link movement to breath. I find joy spending time with family and friends and singing along to whatever song is playing (even though I am usually making up my own words). The best therapy happens when you feel safe enough to be fully yourself, and I try to bring that same authenticity to every session.
