About My Clients

It is common for my clients to be queer or neurodivergent (ADHD, Autistic) and feel alone or constricted in how they show up in the world. Many clients have grown up in a dysfunctional family where conflict, substance abuse or mental illness compromised their sense of safety and self-worth and painful patterns are replayed again in their romantic relationships. Others feel stuck distrusting or resenting authority figures in school or work and don't know how to move beyond this.

My Background and Approach

I trained in Chicago in a psychodynamic pastoral counseling program focused on attachment and family systems. In short, I believe relationships are where the action is. I know how histories of abuse, neglect, and family dysfunction can infiltrate romantic relationships, school and workplace, the doctor's office, and just about any corner of your life where you are dependent on another person. Distrust can be deeply isolating and isolation leaves you vulnerable to depression, anxiety, addiction and more. I have worked in this crucible with many clients who are really trying to let go of their habitual defenses and risk a new way to be. It is hard work and the support and guidance of an experienced therapist can be a really important asset.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Especially as a cis white man, my credibility depends on accountability. I continue to invest in my own therapy and consultation with professionals who hold different identities and therefore different wisdom and life experiences that keep me honest, appropriately humble, and informed. This is important to me because of what is at stake for those in my care. I encourage you, as a client, to expect this of any therapist. Additionally, I don't believe in the idea of "difficult clients." This is often what a client mired in shame has learned to believe about themselves and it's important for a therapist not to perpetuate this. It may also be a matter of understanding difference. I often work with neurodivergent (ADHD, Autism) clients whose behavior or communication styles have not been well received in neurotypical environments such as school and work and their self-esteem suffers. I work very hard not to perpetuate binary thinking and marginalizing understandings of "normalcy."
