About My Clients

Dr. Geneva specializes in working with Black/Indigenous/People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQ+ and gender nonconforming clients. Areas of focus for treatment vary but often center around traumatic experiences, anxiety, body image (including eating disorders), identity-related concerns and spirituality (including difficulties with belief systems). I take a sex positive approach that is poly and kink friendly. Health At Every Size (HAES) provider.

My Background and Approach

I work from an empowerment-based, relational psychodynamic approach informed by feminist and multicultural theories. This is a style of depth therapy that attempts to understand you in a holistic way, considering your early life experiences, sociocultural realities, intersecting and multiple identities, belief systems, and anything else that you think may be relevant to who you are as a person. Relational psychodynamic therapies focus on the relationship between the therapist and client as a source of transformation and focus on authenticity, collaboration and empowerment. I am also happy to integrate techniques from other therapies if you would like to work on specific skills, such as from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) or acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Throughout our time together, I focus on what you want to work on in an environment of caring that will hopefully help you feel safe, brave and heard.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

My entire career has been focused on working with BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. I identify as a cisgender female Latinx queer therapist who is active in her faith. I come from a working class family of immigrants (from Mexico) and was the first person in my family to graduate from college. I became a psychologist because I believe in the power of emotional healing as a way to make this world a safer place for all people. I believe that everyone has the right to make their own decisions about their lives and that people are "doing the best they can" given their life history, sociocultural context and opportunity. I also believe that everyone is capable of healing if provided a consistently safe and supportive environment. In therapy, we look beyond your individual symptoms to understand your life in context of all your experiences, socialization, values and how they are impacted by the world around us. I believe we exist and heal in community.
