One of my main clinical interests is working with adults that grew up with substance abuse in the home. Being the child of someone that struggles with substance abuse comes with complex emotions, experiences, and pain. No matter what your relationship with you parent is now, I'd love to help you process the past or present experience of loving someone with substance use disorder.
Managing a chronic illness comes with an onslaught of emotions and stress. Whether your recently received a chronic illness diagnosis or have been living with one your whole life, I can be there to help you manage the experiences that come with living with a chronic illness.
Being located in the Bible Belt, christianity's influence is felt in most aspects of life, and unfortunately many people have experience with high-demand religion's harmful side affects. One aspect of identity development is evaluating the beliefs that we grew up with and asking ourselves if we believe the same on our own. This process of deconstruction and uncovering religious trauma can be overwhelming, and I can walk with you through with my trauma-informed approach.
CBT is woven through most of what I do. I believe that our emotions are sending us messages, and then we just need to understand what it's saying, then determine if it's true or not. From there we can adjust our behavior. That's CBT in a nut shell.
IFS essentially views all aspects of the person as a "part" of the whole self. So when we have aspects we don't like about ourselves, we are asking what "part" is this and what is its job (a lot of times it's trying to protect us). When we are kind to these parts of us, we can normally figure out better ways for this part to do its job.
EMDR is a specialized trauma therapy that uses bilateral stimulation (BLS) to help us process traumatic experiences. Our brain gets stuck after a traumatic experience because we don't know how to file it away (process it) so our nervous system thinks it's still happening. By using BLS while we go through the memory, we help our brain realize that it's over and we are safe now.
