About My Clients
I work with clients with a variety of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. I especially enjoy working with members of the LGBTQ community and people in non-traditional relationships (nonmonogamy/polyamory, kink, etc), as I tend to be more knowledgable about these issues than many other therapists. In general I enjoy working with anyone who's self-reflective and ready to make changes, even if they're not quite sure what those changes are yet.
My Background and Approach
I have a master's degree in social work with a specialization in mental health from the University of Louisville. I've been practicing since 2012, and I've worked with clients from a wide variety of backgrounds with many different types of struggles. I take pride in meeting my clients where they are, getting to know them, and partnering with them to create the kind of lives that they want. I would describe my approach to my clients as respectful, curious, openminded, and flexible. I take an integrative approach to therapy, but tend to use acceptance and commitment therapy most often. I love ACT's focus on getting clear about what's important and then taking action to move toward those things, along with the powerful tools it provides to help us get unstuck from unhelpful patterns. My clients will also find me using other elements of cognitive-behavioral therapies, as well as EMDR and psychodynamic and existential approaches.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
In addition to my master's degree in social work, I also have a master's degree in women's and gender studies, which has greatly impacted me as a therapist. This degree has helped situate my practice within a social justice framework, with a focus on empowering my clients to make the most of their lives and to thrive in the face of oppression. I consider myself an intersectional feminist and am antiracist, pro-LGBTQ, pro-choice, pro-immigrant, pro-sex worker, fat positive, sex-positive, and kink-positive. I'm also agnostic, but I have a tremendous respect for and interest in other people's faith traditions.
