About My Clients
Adoptive parents, adoptees and birth parents want to be around others who “get it”. Adoption can be a very isolating experience. Because adoption needs are unique. Because parenting children with a history of trauma can look different from parenting biological children. Because adoption is complicated; the feelings surrounding adoption can be mixed up and confusing. There may come a point in your adoption journey when you need professional support. I want to partner with you to that end.
My Background and Approach
I have been interested in adoption work since I was a teenager and volunteered in orphanages in Asia. Over my career, I have experience in the foster care system in Tennessee and in Georgia. I gained valuable clinical experience providing in home services for teenagers and their parents and working with children in psychiatric residential treatment facility. I work with a private adoption agency to conduct home studies and postplacement supervision. I am passionate about the issues that surround adoption- grief & loss, attachment, trauma and addressing the behaviors, thoughts and feelings that stem from these experiences. I work to ensure that individuals from each side of the adoption triad are educated on adoption. I create a safe space for individuals or couples to explore the confusion that comes from adoption. With children, I use my training in child-centered play therapy to connect with children through play. I would love to talk to you more about how I can help you.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I am a Christian and approach my own personal work through that lens. I can incorporate Christian values and beliefs in my work with clients. However, I do not solely work with Christian clients and sometimes think that the teachings from church, at times, can hinder successful adoption. I am married to an African-American man and am raising biracial, biological daughters. So, I feel passionately about racial identity issues and race relations in the context of adoption. I am very comfortable talking about race and feel honored to have clients trust me with their feelings and experiences in this realm.
