About My Clients
My client's are smart and self-aware. They lead busy and active lives often achieving successful careers. They also feel anxious often and believing that they are failing at life. They put their own needs last and ignore their emotions and relationship needs to focus on everyone else. They say that they need to change, and make plans or even enact short-term solutions but then fall back to old patterns when stress occurs or others needs seem more important. If this is you, then let's talk!
My Background and Approach
Affirming, Challenging, and Holistic - I will work with you to support your change. Therapy is not about making you into a new person, or creating an idealized but unrealistic "Stepford" family. It is about ultimately realizing you are already good enough and that you deserve to feel, think, and act like you are special. Therapy should help you grow into the person you want to be, to have the family and closeness that you seek, and to support improving yourself to let go of anything that is holding you back. We need to explore who you are, to understand the past versions of you, since this will gives us context. We will work on acceptance and healing from the past, while emphasizing the here and now. Since we are working toward a goal of an improvement we do have some focus into the future. But it is only as a guide, you can't live in the future. My approach balances a sense of positive regard for you, acceptance, and provides practical tools of various therapy techniques.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
My core values and beliefs are central to understanding who I am and what I am striving to achieve in my life. While some of my identities provide power and privilege (white, well-educated, middle-class, cis-gender, married to a cis-gender male, homeowner, Christian), other identities diminish that power and privilege depending upon the context (woman, feminist, liberal, bi-sexual, neurodiverse, UCC member and advocate for social justice). I believe in diversity, equity, and inclusion. I believe that silence in the face of injustice will lead to the destruction of people and our society. I have worked with disability groups advocating and serving people with Epilepsy, disabled Veterans, blind/low vision, abused & neglected children in foster care, and victims/survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner violence. I have rallied, marched, made get out the vote phone calls for reproductive rights, marriage equality. We face unprecedented times and I raise my voice in opposition.
