Dr. Thomas Vance (He/Him/His)

My multicultural training allows me to develop a tailored treatment plan using an intersectional framework. This framework assists in understanding how aspects of one's identities (e.g., race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and others) might combine to create life stressors. In addition to my broad generalist training, and work with the Black/African-American community and other people of color, I am highly skilled in exploring sexuality and sexual concerns. These concerns are explored through sexual and gender history, gender identity evaluations, collaborative care for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, and family support for parents of gender-expansive children and adolescents.

My clinical practice, research, and teaching reflect my commitment to informing social justice efforts with scientific evidence and informing scientific advancements with social justice and multicultural considerations. I am trained in several evidence-based therapies to assist in the management of anxiety, mood disorders, behavioral symptoms, and sexual/gender concerns. I have years of training grounded in tailoring therapy that fits the specific person instead of a general approach. I received my Ph.D. in counseling psychology from The University of Akron. During this training, I completed my pre-doctoral internship at Boston University School of Medicine, at The Center for Multicultural Training in Psychology. Additionally, I completed a clinical and research postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). I am genuinely passionate about working with individuals and couples from diverse backgrounds and who are ready to create the life they deserve.
