About My Clients
If you grew up between two languages and two cultures, you know the exhaustion of translating yourself all day. The version of you in Portuguese or Spanish doesn’t always make it into English. Something gets lost. Feelings, jokes, the way you love your family, the way they drive you crazy.
My Background and Approach
If you found your way here, you probably want a therapist who gets it without a long explanation. I’m Brazilian-American and trilingual in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. A lot of the people I work with are Brazilians, Latinos, and first-generation Americans navigating the bicultural experience- the family loyalty that’s both gift and weight, the language switching, the way home means more than one place. I have over 10 years of experience working with adults and teens on anxiety, depression, identity, family dynamics, relationships, life transitions, and the emotional toll of medical conditions. My doctorate is in clinical psychology with specialized training in health and medical psychology. I understand how complex health conditions affect your emotional well-being, especially when you’re not always believed. In here, you are. You can show up tired, angry, in your pajamas, in the version of yourself you don’t let anyone else see. I see you as you are, and that’s where we start.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe therapy should be available in the language you actually live in. For a lot of bilingual and first-generation people, the version of yourself in another language never quite makes it into the therapy room, and something essential gets left at the door. I understand the bilingual experience from the inside, and there’s room here for the parts of you that live in Portuguese, Spanish, or English. Too many of the people I work with, especially women and people of color, have spent years being told their pain is anxiety, their symptoms are exaggerated, their experience is too much. They arrive used to defending themselves before they can even start. That fight stops here. I welcome people of all identities, orientations, and backgrounds. Who you love, how you identify, and how you move through the world are yours. My job is to meet you there. I believe culture, body, and identity belong in the therapy space. You shouldn’t have to leave any part of yourself in the waiting room.
