I enjoy helping those that are struggling from zero. Having nothing and starting life from scratch seems tough. I know it is a rut to get out of and start fresh without baggage. Bag and baggage is when to go home and get out of jail to the outside world feeling numb and adjusting to society seems like a party. Rules that don't apply to us and wanting o do the whole world appears easy. Thinking, behavior, and consequences are the key.
Drug addiction and recovery are two different animals. Drug addiction overcomes you to the point that you do not know what you are doing. Car accidents, divorce, fighting, and not caring are the symptoms and end result. Recovery, on the other hand, is hard and difficult but gratifying. The reward and consequences that scientists been arguing about for years using mice. I believe it is more to it than that and spirituality is the key to living life to its fullest.
Alcohol is a popular drug because it is legal and accessible as medical marijuana. Alcohol follows the same pattern as drugs by tolerance that increases over time for the alcoholic. couple beers, six-pack, 12 -pack, one case, and then bar hopping. The end result is having a blackout where the alcoholic cannot remember who they ran over with the car or loses sections of their memory over time or have the shakes in the morning trembling. Can alcohol be stopped in paradise?
I have used cognitive behavioral therapy with people with various problems stemming from housing, bus pass, welfare, quest, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, divorce, abuse, TRO, criminal records, probation, parole, EAP, and alcoholics. Thinking patterns and errors in thinking are identified and changes are made through processing feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.
Anger is a form of fear that has thoughts leading to behavior and consequences. Techniques used to de-escalate is key to dealing with angry thoughts. Learning new skills to cope with anger by focusing on irrational thought as being jealous without facts. Training on how our thoughts and assumptions can be destructive.
Drugs are a hard one to deal with especially when the addict is enabled by the parents or significant other. To enable an addict is to destroy them. Tough love is a hard task to bring about and training can be done through Al-Anon. We must help the addict to recover and being nice is not enough. We have to be tough and strict with the addict for them to recover. I am tough to my clients for 14 years and they like me more.
