Connie Omari (she/her)

I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2006 as a double major in Psychology and African-American Studies. I later received my Master of Arts and Master of Education in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. Finally, I hold a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University where I defended my dissertation entitled: Marital Attitudes and Expectations Between Whites and Blacks in America. I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and hold a certificate in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Hypnosis. I also hold a certificate in Telemental Health Counseling and Supervision so that I can provide ethically sound and effective telemental health services to my clients. I have been working with people who have been experiencing trauma, depression, and anxiety since 2007.

I am an active member of the Black Lives Matter Movement as it is clear to me that the lives of black and brown people are consistently overlooked in America. I believe that there are unique needs and interests which are inherent within the black community that must be addressed by utilizing evidenced based practices through the lenses of multiculturalism. As a result, I employ a variety of multicultural facets in therapy that take into consideration post traumatic slave syndrome, inter-generational trauma, race-based trauma and complications associated with institutional &overt racism. Providing multi cultural counseling is important to me because racism has negatively affected my mental health. As a child, I needed a black therapist, who understood my race-based trauma; As an adult I've been harmed by a therapist who did not. It warms my heart to depths unknown, to be that voice, advocate, and supporter for blacks in search of mental freedom. We have been in bondage enough.
