About My Clients
I work best with those who are facing challenges related to ADHD and/or Autism, including the individual, spouse/partner, parents, or siblings who may find it difficult navigating our quirks. Adolescence through adulthood, these diagnoses are a part of us...often offering new challenges (and uncovering new strengths!) along the way. If you find yourself struggling with feeling like you're "always losing my keys" or "just can't get my kid to focus," I may be able to help.
My Background and Approach
Contrary to many therapists, I believe in the human connection made possible through helpful transparency. Acknowledging honestly when I don’t understand your dilemma, offering personal insights, and sharing stories of my own experiences is a standard part of practice for clients working with me. Establishing and nurturing the therapeutic relationship is imperative for our ongoing trust, respect, and communication as we work together towards your goals. I use an integrative approach including Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and experiential exercises. Understanding our individual strengths and challenges is the first step to increasing self awareness and subsequently regulation of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. These are greatly impacted by our relationships, so identifying and practicing healthy strategies for connection is often at the forefront whether working with an individual, parents, siblings, couples, or within a group.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe every person has the right to reach their full potential. Celebrating success, embracing and learning from failure, and practicing self compassion are foundational for my personal and professional development. Equality for all is a constant pursuit. As a double graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill (including a Minor in Social and Economic Justice), my underlying philosophy is to challenge the status quo, question traditional norms, and explore opportunities for creating new systems and perspectives (no matter how "outside of the box"). In my house, we practice by the mantra "The weirder the better," and it is a beautiful way to live! During free time I enjoy reading in a hammock, playing with our rescue dogs, camping, and volunteering with our local Special Olympics ice skating athletes.
