Hi! I'm Chris. I identify as disabled, neurodivergent, and progressive. I am here to support you no matter what your identity.
Licensed Professional Counselor in , TX
A large portion of my experience as a counselor has come working closely with neurodiverse clients. I worked with these clients as a therapist, a psychosocial and life-skills trainer, and a career counselor. Overall about half of my current counseling clients have been diagnosed with ADHD at some point in their lives. As a counselor with ADHD, I know the struggles we face. I know the emotional toll of trying to fit into a world that wasn't built for you. Please let me know if I can help you.
I have been trained in the Gottman method of relationship counseling. A lot of the work I do is with spouses, ex-spouses, and adult children of "narcissistic" individuals. These toxic relationships can have wide ranging effects on our lives, our sense of self, and our reality. I want to help you identify toxic relationships, escape them, recover from their effects, and learn the skills to build healthy relationships going forward.
I have been trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy. CPT is a trauma-focused therapy developed with the VA to treat PTSD in military personnel. The process was later adapted to suit other types of trauma. CPT combines what we know about the biology of the brain with existing theories of cognitive psychology to make actual changes in the way our brains perceive traumatic events. Research on CPT has shown outstanding effectiveness in the reduction of the symptoms associated with PTSD.
I've been practicing solution focused therapy from my first day as a therapist. We'll use SFT to identify strengths and use them to build upon our successes. SFT looks for the exceptions to our problems to use the skills we already have to make the tangible changes we want. I use these concepts in an integrative style, taking a forward looking approach while still making room to process thoughts and feelings from our past.
You can't throw a rock these days without hitting a therapist that uses CBT. And for good reason. CBT has been shown to one of the most effective evidence based treatments available to counselors. While other counselors may take every client step by step through the same general process, I use CBT concepts as a foundation for understanding the connection between what we think and what we feel. My focus is on finding the specific ways I can help you, the unique indivudal in front of me
Trauma is complicated, even when it's not "complex." Because of that it's important that the help you get is catered to YOUR needs. I use a combination of trauma therapy techniques designed to help you challenge your unhelpful beliefs while also using what we know about human physiology and neuroscience to train your body AND brain to better respond to triggers and stressful events. Trauma therapy doesn't have to be traumatic. The goal is to heal wounds, not reopen them.
Every day I hear people speak with that voice in the back of our heads. It tells us we are stupid, not normal, that we should have known better, that its all our fault. Over time, it starts to feel like just another part of us. But it's not even our voice. This is the voice of our bullies, abusers, and the people who could have helped, but didn't. We don't have to hold onto those voices. We can let go and find peace. You are worthy. You are enough. I'd like to help you see that.
